Mick Harris (right in photo), along with John Coley (left),
managed the 2007-2008 season under-11s squad for WPFC. They will take
the team into the second division after promotion as champions at the
end of May. (We'll catch up with John another time to hear what
motivates him to spend his Sunday mornings on the touchline in some far
flung corner of Royston Crow Country.)Mick started working with the squad three years back, helping Winston out with two unruly seven-a-side teams of under-9s. He was so good, we made him manager! And what was it that got him to sacrifice a weekend lie in? As with so many others it was a combination of his own boys wanting to play regular football and the squad needing a hand. His eldest son is a valued member of the team and another is training with Luton (who?). So what are Mick's proudest moments as a manager. Well, its no surprise he picks winning the league in May. But he also says winning last year's Shefford Saints tournament was very important for the team. As under-10s the squad showed lots of promise but lacked consistency. They dropped silly points and finished poorly placed. That meant winning the tournament gave everyone - players, managers, and supporters - a big confidence boost. It was all the sweeter because the team Mick and John's boys knocked out in the final was a top team that had hammered WPFC in the league. Mick has graced local pub sides with his silky skills and continues to play 6-a-side football. He supports Arsenal, which must make for some interesting discussions with John who, we understand, definitely does not! |
