Oo are yer?

We are a football club based in Hitchin in North Hertfordshire. We have teams for players from seven years of age upwards. Most of  our teams play in the Royston Crow League. They also compete in the Hertfordshire FA County Cup and in summer tournaments. Our managers and administrators are all volunteers, many of them parents of players and former players. Some of them played for Wymondley Park teams themselves. Our home ground is at  Lucas Lane in Hitchin. It's not that easy to find if you are a visiting team so click on the link for a map (Here we are).

The club has been going since the early 1980s. It was established because there was insufficient opportunity for local youngsters to play football in the area. The name comes not from the nearby villages of Great and Little Wymondley (although early matches were played there) but because some of the club's founders lived on Wymondley Park estate in Hitchin. You can find out more about the history of the club by clicking here. We would like to hear from former players and supporters who can help us build up fuller picture of our past.

This site provides information for current players and parents and carers and those who wish to get involved. Teams are often looking for new players, particularly over the summer, so watch out for news or contact us and we will put you in touch with right manager.

Season's greetings

The very best of seasonal cheer to all our players, managers, other officials and - of course - supporters. Greetings also to our opponents. The Wymondley teams have had an excellent first half of the season and will go from strength to strength. Football resumes on January 10 and 11, so keep fit!

Wymondley teams to square up in cup clash

The third round draw for the Under-13s League Cup has been made, pitting two Wymondley Park teams against each other. The third division Jets have been drawn at home against Firesharks of the first division. Of course, due to some demongraphic bulge, we have three teams in that age group. The third of them - named simply Wymondley Park - is also in the first division. When they met the Firesharks in the league in early October, it was the Firesharks who came out on top.
So, will this keenly awaited contest have the bookies smiling or will there be a giant killing? You will only know if you come along (or read the match reports on this site, of course). Turnstiles may be erected for the day! And the date to put in your diary is ... well we don't have it yet because some League Cup and County Cup fixtures clash but it will likely be in January.

More news from our old boys

Last month we had a message from Damon in Canada, who played for WPFC in its early years. Now more memoirs have come our way from another of our old boys. Ian has cleared up the mystery of when and how we started playing in black and white. He also has some of those you-can-laugh-now-but-it-wasn't-funny-then memories of brave defeats. (If you missed Damon's message, you can read it on the Old News page)

I'm Ian Harvey. I played for WPFC from 1982 to1988. I was a pupil at Wlliam Ransom and joined the club with some of my school friends. There were just two teams at that time, the Under-10s and Under-12s.
I’ve read your website and I’m amazed how large the club has become but more so how successful it is. We were a team that loved playing but unfortunately every other team loved playing against us as every week we would get a drubbing. I remember our worst defeat was against Westmill who did us 24-0! Our top goal scorer was Andrew Imrie who bagged three goals in a season and we grabbed one solitary point over three seasons when we drew 1-1 with Purwell up at Little Wymondley - great days!
John Ferguson, John Fisher and Bret and Matt Washington's dad were the coaches when I joined and my dad – Terry - took over as manager of the Under-10s in my first season. I’m sure this had nothing to do with me becoming captain for most of my WPFC career! He used to put together some killer circuits for us on a thursday night at Bowes Lyon school [now Priory School], which he developed further when around 1986 we moved to Hitchin Town’s old training ground next to the main pitch. His efforts never came to fruition as we finished bottom every season. However his motivation and enthusiasm remained boundless. He would give half time team talks like he was managing a team in the World Cup final, only his faith was wasted on us muppets as we'd run around like headless chickens but nevertheless enjoying our footy!
The club was always keen on trips and I remember in 1981, just before I joined, I was invited to a tour round Wembley stadium. In December 1982 we went to Tottenham vs Southampton and in ‘83 we went to watch Watford and even got on Match of the Day. They did a piece on Watford’s family enclosure and as the cameras passed in front of it we all bundled to the front waving and shouting. I believe that’s the only time WPFC made it on the big screen!
I’m in the 1984 photo taken on ransoms rec [see photos from the archives page]. I’m the good looking one in the Spurs kit. To the left of me is Dominic Buck (his brother Kevin was our ‘keeper and I’m sure the experience still haunts him!). Then there’s Andrew Collitt, not sure who the next bloke is but Mark Ferguson is on the left. The front row from the left is Simon Lovewell, Paul ferguson and Andrew Still. Andrew’s dad -John - later joined the coaching staff.
Other people I recognise in the photos are Simon Deacon, Derek Fisher, David Ferris, Stuart Finch, David Waldock and Mark Finch.
I think in 1985 Andrew Collit’s dad, who ran Randalls butchers in Ninesprings, sponsored the team and we finally binned the yellow strip and got a white shirt with black shorts strip.
I have a load of old pics which I will try to dig out and send over to you. It’s great to know WPFC is still going!

Promising start to the season

Some half-a-dozen matches into the season, how are we doing in the Royston Crow League? Pretty well as it happens. The Under-11s are mid-table in the first division and the Under-12s top the second division . The WPFC Firesharks are in second place in the under-13s first division. The WPFC Under-13s, promoted last season, are finding it tougher going and foot the table but they'll get going soon. The third division WPFC Jets Under-13s are comfortably mid-table. The under-14s team of ours in the first division lies in fourth place, biding its time before it pounces. And the division two under-14s squad are in second place. The Under-16s hold third place in the second division.
On top of that, of course, several of the teams have made progress in the early rounds of the League and County cups.

Child welfare

At Wymondley Park FC the welfare of our players is paramount. If you have any issues you wish to discuss with our welfare officer, we have set up a dedicated email address to which only she will have access. You can find it in the left hand column of this page.
